SOUTH FRANCE ATTRACTIONS The South of France has something for everyone including wonderful cities, amazing landscapes, delicious cuisine and famous wines. Each of the regions Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées and Aquitaine has many things to do and see. From the drama of the mountains, the beauty of the countryside and vine covered hills to the seemingly endless sandy beaches - it's easy to see why it's such a popular place! The whole area is also rich in history. Prehistoric sites with Megaliths, Menhirs, Dolmens, Cave Art and Roman structures dot the landscape. The Greeks founded the oldest cities in the France in this region and they were followed by the Celtic and Roman invasions. Some of the South of France was once part of Spain, this influence can still be seen, with the festivals and bull-fighting in places like Nimes and Beziers. The history of the South of France is also linked with the Cathars and Knights Templars. There are many Cathar castles or "chateaux Cathares" in Languedoc Roussillon and the mysterious Rennes-le-Chateau. The Romans introduced wine making and the Languedoc is now largest wine producing region in the world.
