BEZIERS This once Celtic and Roman town sits on a hill overlooking the river Orb. It is situated on the ancient Roman Road (“Via Domitia”) .

From the terrace of St. Nazaire Cathedral the stunning panoramic views will take your breath away.The 600 meters long Promenade in the center of the town is lined with pavement restaurants, bars and cafés.

Beziers is associated with the Cathars. In 1209 Pope Innocent III sent the crusaders to kill all the Cathars. The abbot-commander was asked how to know Cathar from Catholic and said "Kill them all - the Lord will recognise His own"! So the Crusaders set the town on fire and slaughtered all in the town killing 20,000 people approx. The Cathars had questioned the materialisim of the church and were seen as a threat.

Numerous festivals take place in Beziers during the Summer - Feia d'Ete, including the Feria or bullfighting evidence of the Spanish influence.

There is easy access with Béziers-Agde-Vias Airport.

 

Nearby Roman Attraction : Visit The Roman Bridge in St Thibery, crossing the River Herault. It is the longest bridge of the old Roman Road (“Via Domitia”) linking Rome to Spain.
