Lourdes is famous for it's Catholic shrine, where Our Lady of Lourdes is believed to have appeared, in 1858, to St. Bernadette. Nowadays, Lourdes is the second largest site of Catholic Pilgrimage in the world, after Rome. Over 6 million people from 5 continents make the pilgrimage to Lourdes each year, many hoping for cures attributed to the holy waters of the shrine. Lourdes is also the second biggest hotel town in France. Pyrenees National Park is nearby and is well worth a visit with it's fantastic scenery. It's ideal for hiking enthusiasts.
