Information and photographs for Agde.

AGDE CITY is in the Herault region of Languedoc Roussillon in South France. It is the second oldest city in France. This beautiful village is situated on the banks of the river Hérault only 4km from the sun drenched beaches of the Mediterranean.

The 11th century cathedral, which dominates the river vista in Agde, is constructed of volcanic rock from the local Mont St. Loup extinct volcano. Indeed Agde is known as " The Black Perl of the Mediterranean" because of the dark colour of the volcanic rock. Agde city buildings, in the winding narrow streets, are hundred's of years old. Agde village, with its friendly citizens, offers a host of bars, cafés, restaurants, markets, concerts and interesting walks along the Canal du Midi.

There are also very modern super markets including a new Hyper-u, with vast displays of French cheeses, French breads, fish etc. The local caves and vineyards in Agde offer a great variety of good wines of the South of France at excellent prices.

Agde City is only 20 minutes drive from Beziers, 30 minutes from Montpellier, and 90 minutes from the Spanish border. Paris is 4 hours by TGV. See our Map of Agde.
