NIMES was colonised by the Romans in the 1st Century and is on the ancient Roman Road (Via Domitia) . Important remains of the Roman Empire can still be seen here today. These include the splendid Amphitheatre, the Maison Carrée Temple and the nearby Pon du Gard Aquaduct. This is a vibrant town with much new architecture as well as the old and plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from. The Spanish influence is also evident with the bullfighting ( which takes place in the old Amphitheatre) and the many Tapas Bars.
More Roman Attractions : Visit The Roman Bridge in St Thibery, crossing the River Herault. It is the longest bridge of the old Roman Road (Via Domitia) linking Rome to Spain.
